WHAT IT IS: Rocky Balboa, ex-world boxing champion, resolves, against all odds, to fight on a ring again.
HOW IT IS: Although its story recalls the hope and determination of the first Rocky (John G. Avildsen, 1976), Rocky Balboa is a pale copy. Its screenplay is spread too thin with storylines ranging from Rocky’s obsolescence to his relationship with his son and his role as a replacement father. Stallone’s direction fares much worse, barely breaking away from established stereotypes. The actors are consistently bad, with exception made of Burt Young’s Paulie.
In the end, this Rocky doesn’t ring true, or at least as true as Rocky used to.
IF YOU LIKE: The Rocky franchise.
