WHAT IT IS: Two suburbanites start an affair to escape the expectations of their society.
HOW IT IS: Little Children is close in theme to Field’s last movie, In the Bedroom. But, where the latter concentrated on the disintegration of family through a tragic event, this movie chooses to explore the self-realization and discovery of these characters in a modern suburban setting. Field is an actor and both these movies are character pieces where Winslet, Wilson and Connelly shine. Wilson is typecast as the handsome, ex-football jock lawyer-type uncertain of his future prospects. Although true at times, Little Children never compels as the story suffers from the same shortcoming as In the Bedroom: it is merely an actors’ showcase.
IF YOU LIKE: In The Bedroom, Revolutionary Road.
