WHAT IT IS: In the middle of good-bye celebrations, a group of twenty-somethings film a monster attack on Manhattan with their hand-held camera.
HOW IT IS: Marketed as a ground-level monster movie, Cloverfield fails at its every opportunity. A high-concept stretched to the running time (an hour and a half that feels like three), it is the child of J.J. Abrams, creator of high-concept shows like Alias, Lost and Fringe. The actors don’t even try to act while the lines that they spurt out are as ludicrous as the situations they unbelievably succeed in getting in and out of. The direction is limited as Reeves tries to compensate for his lack of experience with effects and camera movement. It is ludicrous and boring and, in my humble opinion, one of the worst movies of 2008.
IF YOU LIKE: Godzilla, Independence Day.
