The Savages (Tamara Jenkins, 2007)

WHAT IT IS: Two siblings must decide how best to take care of their ailing father after his wife dies, and he becomes homeless.

HOW IT IS: Tamara Jenkins explores the importance of family and the effects of dementia in this hard depiction of growing old. Hoffman and Linney are pitch-perfect, but are eclipsed by the excellent Phillip Bosco as their sick father. In its rawness and truth, The Savages is a bitter pill, dwelling on death and disease more than on any hopeful outcome. Although these are issues that we must all face someday, it is a sad, bleak movie and should be approached as such.

IF YOU LIKE: P.S., Happiness, Boys Don’t Cry.
