WHAT IT IS: This is the unusual story of Benjamin Button, who was gifted (cursed?) with the ability to age backwards.
HOW IT IS: With this screenplay, Eric Roth re-examines familiar territory: the fantastic biopic. Roth is an impressive screenwriter, with to his credit classics like Munich, The Insider and Forrest Gump. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button exudes the same wide-eyed wonder than Forrest Gump, from its fantastic premise to Button’s worldwide travels. Brad Pitt acts through CGI effects with purpose. Cate Blanchett conveys, when necessary, the ignorance of youth and the wisdom of age. She is, as always, superb. Fincher directs with skill, but less bravado than previous efforts. It at times feels like more of a story for Zemeckis or Spielberg but Fincher succeeds in his effort, if only barely. In a year of widespread disappointment, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has a rejuvenating effect.
